happy birthdays to me!

Maha goodness. :)

Well I’ve been a super spoilt, super lucky girl this last fortnight. Though it wasn’t quite as lavish as last year’s birthday month, it has certainly given me countless moments to reflect on my blessings, feel incredibly loved, be surrounded by amazing friends, and generally just be a very smiley (and inebriated) girl indeed!

It started out with being totally unprepared for my birthday’s arrival, given the crazy month I’ve had. The day before my actual birthday though, the lovely Ange, Krin and my dance partner Sam took me out to lunch at DUMPLINGS, which totally counteracted the awful rainy winter day we were having. Then they took me to dessert at Max Brenners – I’d totally forgotten just how good it was, and it was all I could do to stop myself from applauding the sweet treats as they arrived at our table.

mmmmmm.

The evening of the birthday eve, I last minutedly requested that a small group of friends join me for a chilled drink nearby the studio after a coaching lesson I taught. It ended up, as soirees with good friends tend to do with alcohol as a fuel, being anything BUT chilled. Let’s just say that 4 hours later, we ended up at a place called Sahara Nights across the road – the local middle eastern shisha kebab nightclub complete with LIT UP hats and headbands, pop music mixed into belly dance beats, giggles and shisha inhaling madness, cocktails with way too many umbrellas in each one, and it just gets dodgier and dodgier the more I try to dredge up the memories in my head. Let me show you just HOW dodgy and insanely fun it was:

drinks at atticus finch started out soooo sedate and nice

and then Sahara Nights made us... crazy.

By the time I stumbled home, S was already in bed and I lovingly tried to cuddle him to sleep. He told me the next day that I smelt like a brewery and that I should have kept on my own side of the bed! CHIVALRY!

My actual birthday morning, S tiptoed into the room, sure that I would be hungover as hell. Well, I was not. I bolted upright in bed, yelled HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!! And put my arms out for a huge cuddle and kiss! To my extreme excitedness, my handsome man came bearing an armful of gifts!

not 1, but 2 kinds of flowers! SPOILT!

Plus, remember that Shopbop parcel that’s been lying in wait for me to open it?

WELL….

drumroll….

Super spoilt!

We also had lunch at Hellenic Republic with his lovely family, and I met his cousin Maree for the first time, who was just a delight! Amazing food, wonderful company, S’ mum surprised me with some flowers toooooooo, and some new moccasins for winter at my request. Nothing not to love there.

i get to marry into this gorgeous family...

I must’ve still been a little err drunk from the night before – I only had 2 glasses of champagne at lunch, and then was a little “giddy”… and then when the birthday dessert got served, I squawked “AND NOW SING ME THE BIRTHDAY SONG!” and wonderful family that they are, they totally complied! HA!

S and I spent the afternoon doing something we practically NEVER get to do since we don’t get the same days off – we wandered around the Melbourne CBD. I love how beautiful Melbourne is, and walking hand in hand with S in the drizzle, waltzing around various stores, kissing on street corners and enjoying the day was simply sublime.

:)

My birthday night was the evening of the Australian Salsa & Latin Open – Victoria. I had to work at this event – judging it – but it was ALL good even though it was my birthday, because I got one of the best birthday presents a coach could ask for. I got to watch my “kids” NAIL it on stage. All 4 of them that competed simply danced their best that night, the best I’ve ever seen them, and exactly what I had always envisioned of them, and it was overwhelming and simply more than I could’ve asked for. Nothing more gratifying to pour your heart and soul into people and watch them shine as a result.

diana, andrew, christian, lys - i was so proud!

The day after my birthday, and after a GOOD sleep, S took me to my birthday dinner. He has a habit of choosing absolutely brilliant restaurants for my birthdays, and this year was no exception. We went to MAHA, and feasted like sultans. It was a brilliant night shared with a special man, and I felt utterly adored and adoring in return! (Also, just as a bit of random relationship advice – there is NOTHING better than a man who upon watching your eyes light up at a certain shared dish, proclaims it ALL YOURS).

Maha goodness. :)

A week of work went by after that weekend, and then THIS WEEKEND, it started all over again.

Firstly, S took me to Rock the Ballet by Rasta Thomas – we’d watched it last year and absolutely loved it! As always, we made a night of it by frocking up, having dinner at the Arts Centre Curve Bar, and then watching the show itself with cocktails at intermission!

HALLO BOIZ.

love a night at the theatre!

The next night, he took me to a BALL at the Crown Palladium. How absolutely fun to get frocked up, and venture out with him, dance, eat good food, and watch the fashions out there. It was a footy ball of sorts, so there was PLENTY of bad fashion and skunky behaviour to watch and be amused by! I know it sounds terrible – but when you have girls throwing up in the bathroom by 9pm, you know you’re at a special kind of ball! In any case, we had a brilliant time with a couple of his friends, plus the great band, funny MCs and great food.

my dress is compliments of Zampera. His suit is from Satch.

On Sunday, I embarked on my yearly birthday luncheon with the laydees – the champagne lunch at Number 8, also at Crown. This year the free flow was Moet Chandon, which was super duper pleasing, and the menu has expanded and the food and service was still impeccable. PLUS, I got to hang with some of my favourite women who inspire me with their fabulousness, have an amazing time, and oh, did I mention the free flow of Moet?

ladies who lunch!

That shot was taken at the BEGINNING of the lunch, when we were all still very sober, thank you very much.

Needless to say, after 4 hours of Moet, by the time I headed to my birthday party itself at Trunk, I was… HAPPY. HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY OH YEAH OH YEAH.

Unfortunately, by this stage, I no longer had presence of mind to remember that I even owned a camera, let alone use it, so I don’t have any photos of the evening. :(

BUT I was superbly elated to walk into Trunk to find OODLES of people who had come despite my 5 DAYS notice that I was having a party. I’m serious. I thought there may be 10-20 people. But everyone kept showing up in droves, DROVES I tell you,and ever 5 minutes was a moment of OH HAI! I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU CAME! THANK YOU FOR COMING! and more (hic) drinks, good vibes everywhere, and friends from my different communities and walks of life coming together.

All.

Because.

I.

Said.

Please.

Wow. Highly amazing, having a room filled with such wonderment. At one stage, I remember (blearily) gazing upon everyone sitting in little clusters, enjoying good conversation over wines, sound of laughter pealing across the bar, and was filled with great gratitude – to have good friends is one thing. But to have a community of truly nice people around you? Who rock up on a super cold day just to celebrate your birthday and present you with the HUGEST card you’ve ever seen? AMAZING.

Plus, I hear that everyone banded together to create me the best present EVER, TOTALLY unprecedented, and organised by the one and only Alison. But I’ll wait till I receive it to confirm. Because this is truly a once in a lifetime moment of specialness.

So.

If you’re still reading after this 1300 word essay that was my birthday shenanigans, congratulations! You survived!

Seriously though, wasn’t it amazing?

GLARE.

SAY IT WAS AMAZING.

(yup, maybe still a little inebriated after all. and GLOWING from all the goodness around me.)

GRIN.

single happy moment

20120410-183910.jpg

Last week we all met up for the gorgeous Katerina’s birthday – her last birthday before she has her baby!! It’s probably the last time all of us girls (save for Liz in Sydney) will all be in the same room before Leigh and Kat’s little bundle of joy join us, and it was simply wonderful to see everyone and cackle over stories.

20120410-183910.jpg

I wasn’t in a hugely chatty mood, being all run down and in a bit of back pain, but it was kind of nice to just sit back and chill with this wonderful group of girlfriends we have who have grown together over the last few years to form a strong and close knit mini community, and all through dance. Hearing their babble around me, smiling across the room at everyone and having a chilled out drink whilst celebrating a very special lady’s birthday… Single happy moment indeed.

birthday boy

correct me if I'm wrong but he looks like he is LOVING IT!

A bit over a month ago (and before we got all engaged), it was S’ birthday.

He wanted to keep it low key, and so we had a small family barbeque for him at home with his folks and girls.

quite nice actually!

The problem though is that S spoils me rotten ALL the time – and here we were making the poor man work like a smoke chef on his own birthday. So I decided to keep it low key, whilst trying to show him just how special he is to all of us.

Firstly, as soon as he got home from work, I made him wear a BIRTHDAY BOY badge. He was sooooo thrilled!

aww! cute!

I also decorated the table we set all the food on.

By the end of the night, after a lot of eating, a bit of champagne and a lot of merriment, I ended up decorating him as well for the clincher.

correct me if I'm wrong but he looks like he is LOVING IT!

All in all I think it made S happy, even if it was nothing like the scale he tends to pamper me with. I don’t think I could possibly match up to his impossibly high standards though, so really, he only has himself to blame. :)

happy birthday, baby girl

shan and sham

Well, the little one’s birthday is just an hour away now, and I thought it would be fun to dredge up some old old old (read: BLACKMAIL MATERIAL) type photos to send her. Just so that as she turns a whole year older, the gravity of some of the very questionable activities we used to get up to as slightly tipsy ladies would shame her, and not just that, the knowledge that I STILL HAVE THESE PHOTOS you know, sober up her day a little.

However, I didn’t JUST come across treacherously bad photos of mistimed hilarity – I also came across some rather nice and poignant memories of walking the city’s laneways in winter with her, exploring and just chatting whilst the day passed, (wasn’t university just grand for days like what?!), moments of hilarity reserved only for those who spend enough time with you that EVERYTHING becomes a giggly reference, and also just some nights of debauchery. The photo below is one of the few suitable for the internets, and was before a fun night out.

shan and sham

ahh. so fresh faced, so YOUNG! And shiny tacky satin clothes! YAY!

Look at the both of us, in our early twenties, and ready to conquer the night.

Anways. Happy birthday Baby Girl, and I just wanted to say how FAR you’ve come from satin clothes. I am glad though that you’ve retained that sassy hilarious wit and most importantly, I’m super pleased that all this way forward and all grown up, we’re still here for each other. FIST BUMP.

sonia’s 29th birthday

sonia birthday cake

Hello! Sorry for being so damn scarce on the posting front. My back has seemed a little better in the last 2 months, and I’ve been trying to make up for a year (yes! a full year!) of doing what has seemed like nothingness. And of course, overdoing it, as I’m prone to doing, and then needing lots of resting time. So the last 6 weeks or so have been a rollercoaster ride of DOING! MUCH! THINGS! and doing. nothing.

Yes.

So, thankfully, in the midst of all the craziness, I got to spend a beautiful afternoon with Sonia celebrating her 29th birthday. And it was a much needed oasis in an overwhelming period of busyness, and plus, we got to eat cake. Oh and nachos. What’s not to like?

birthday lunch

try blowing out THESE babies!

What was supposed to be an intimate lunch turned into a lazy afternoon spent chatting and smiling over incredibly good Mexican food, a decadent cake (where her father got the number of candles RIGHT!) and strolls around St Kilda.

Sonia and her lovely dad, Rudy

My favourite part was when Sonia got all bratty. Sonia is possibly the most easy going person in the world, so when she DEMANDS we order way too much food and sangria, by god, it’s going to happen, because it’s her birthday. And when she wants to cut the cake her way, because goddamit, it’s her birthday, no one stands in her way.

sonia birthday cake

James looks on with fear.

The nicest thing though, was seeing Sonia so happy. Surrounded by the 2 favourite men in her life, and being fed and cared for. There was also some smugness on her part at still being in her twenties, but she’ll learn. It’s only a year before she joins the ranks of us old thirty year olds, and that smugness will turn into fine lines and crepey skin she never knew she would have. Who, me? Bitter? NO WAY.

happy birthday sonia!

aww. naive happiness.

Enjoy it while you can, Sonia!

birthday month: the awesome end of my 20s

featuredIMG_0113

Well, the birthday month is FINALLY OVER people.

And I’m FINALLY 30, officially. Well, unofficially, because I DECIDED when it was to be official, in my ever special controlling way.

Remember this post, where I regaled you with the idea of a MONTH LONG festival of me? Well, here’s how it’s gone down:

4th May: commenced S and I’s lomantic trip to Egypt! We horserode through the pyramids, went on our first hot air balloon ride, and ate amazing food. And of course, did LOTS more but I’m slowly blogging all of it!

14th May: we went from Egypt to Singapore for some family time!

15th May: Family has a birthday dinner for me.

16th May: Salsa friends in Singapore and I have a late night teh with lots of giggles and goss.

17th May: Lunch with one of my oldest friends Wei, since her birthday is 1 day before mine!

18th May: Return to Melbourne

20th May: My mummy arrived in Melbourne and SPOILT me rotten, taking me shopping and looking after me!

21st May: Latin 247 (Salsa event)

23rd May: Mummy leaves.

25th May: S is took me out to a super duper romantic dinner.

26th May: My actual birthday where my students sang happy birthday to me and it was VERY nice!

28th May: S’ niece’s deb ball, which means BALL GOWN oh gosh YAY!

29th May: My beautiful girlfriends and I had a ridiculously good champagne lunch for my birthday!

31st May: Dinner at Vlados with the wonderful baby girl, Shamster.

4th June: my ACTUAL birthday party in Melbourne.

Yups, it has been QUITE the whirlwind month, and let me tell you, I am unapologetic for all the fabulousness! I will be remembering this last month with glee for years to come.

And so how did my ENDS WITH A BANG BYE BYE 20′S partay go down?

Oh lordy.

It was MAGNIFICENT.

Firstly, I didn’t have to do a thing. Just before my Egypt trip, I hastily emailed Anita, wondering if she could look at a few venues online for me. And this lovely girl, she did more than organise a venue – she found a venue that I already liked in the city, that didn’t CHARGE for booking it, and worked out all the details without so much as a peep of effort from me. SUPER WIN.

THEN, she also whipped up the cutest little invite by stealing a picture from my Facebook.

sharon pakir 30 birthday party invite

Super cute, right?

Anyways.

I decided to get FROCKED UP, and you know nothing pleases me more, so I was already in a great mood. PLUS, I finally conquered the curls. Yes, the ones on my head. It’s near impossible for me to give myself curls, but by golly, I think I got it this time! Before we left the house, I made S take a photo of me, you know, for posterity.

sharon pakir

MNG dress, random black ribbon, necklace from India, House of Harlow earrings, Samantha Wills cuff. in case you were wondering.

We got to the venue, and lo and behold, the wonderful partay planner Anita had planned MATCHING DECORATIONS. How awesome is this!!

SHARON PAKIR AND ANITA GOH

my beautiful decorations, and me with my beautiful party planner and twinsy.

It was the kind of perfect party night that started with bottles of champagne, and stayed in that happy vortex of blurry energetic fun all night – with friends new, old and present who came to celebrate with me. Everyone was laughing all night, and there was plenty of merriment. The photos kind of speak for themselves:

it was only the start of the night but i found the "reserved" sign HILARIOUS.

great girlfriends - sharon pakir, anita goh, liz miles, alison radford, fay ping

my gorgeous girls

sharon pakir, family, friends

S' lovely family and friends came too! How wonderful!

great news

happy catchups!

I was lulled into this totally happy warm place of flitting around from group to group of people, catching up and having great giggly moments, as the party kept swelling and we started spilling out of our room! THEN, about halfway through the night, Maria grabs me, leading me to the bathroom, citing a “wardrobe malfunction”.

People when a girl believes her wardrobe has been compromised, she is led willingly to a trap. A TRAP.

Before I knew it, myself, Maria and Sham were SQUISHED into the world’s tiniest, slightly grotty bathroom. WAS THIS REALLY NECESSARY? TO RE-TIE MY BELT?

Maria re-tied my belt, and then, WOULDN’T let me leave the bathroom for about 12 minutes. With no good explanation. I knew something was up. Uh huh.

(Unbeknownst to me, THIS was happening outside):

So she finally lets us out, and 3 of us are gasping for fresh air, and OH MY GAWDNESS, all this LOUD singing is taking over the entire bar.

sharon pakir 30th birthday surprise

oh my god.

sharon pakir 30th birthday

it's taking a while to register... all the commotion... er..

sharon pakir surprise birthday

I walked into a SWELLING room of SINGING people and CUPCAKES! AND A CANDLE! AND SINGING!

AND THE CUPCAKES MATCHED MY DRESS!

*swoon*

Then, I have some vague recollection of speeches that made me well up.

speeches at sharon pakir's birthday party

speeches by S and Anita which made me happy cry.

And a toast, which I DO remember, because first, there was a speech which I DEFINITELY barely remember giving.

speech

oh god. Still, it can't have been that bad - people are smiling.

a toast at sharon's birthday party

a toast! WHEE!

And extreme pleasedness at ALL THE JOY.

sharon pakir birthday party

cupcakes, a martini, and surrounded by wonderful people. My glee is apparent.

AND lots of tries at taking a photo with EVERYONE in it.

We failed.

We tried, but FAILED – and only managed to get half the people in it. Still, it’s a COOL SHOT!

birthday party

LOVE!

I don’t actually know how to describe it, but there was just so much light, laughter and love in that room. Everyone was happy about catching up, and it just seemed like an incredibly wonderful place to be at. Turning 30, surrounded by lots of loved ones, friends, and the people who make up my life here in Melbourne.

And so the partay went on.

LOTS of chatters, lots of natters, lots of drinks and nibbles, LOTS of friends just milling about, and gosh, it was a lovely lovely feeling.

Oh, and there was lots of cards and presents. I mean, that helps a LOT.

Those of you who attended – the photos are up on Facebook so you can see it ALL unfold there!

And I just wanted to say THANK YOU. You know, in case it didn’t get covered in my slightly tipsy and unremembered speech.

Firstly, thank you to the PERFECT host, partay planner and wonderment of a twinsy:

anita

hostest with the mostest!

Thank you for possibly the BEST party I’ve ever had, for helping me GET OLD, for auguring in a new fresh healthy year for me and making sure it was a seamless night full of absolute FUN and JOY.

AND THEN, there’s thank you to ALL OF YOU WHO CAME, and also those of you that couldn’t come but wanted to.

Thank you friendlings, for making my life in Melbourne what it is, and for helping me make it a home. Thank you for ensuring I forgot about the woes of the year past, and for helping me truly learn what a celebration is. You all made it oh so special. Thank you for spoiling me with presents, cards, and well wishes. Thank you for being just lovely. I’m so truly humbled to be in the presence of SO MANY wonderful people, and to be so supported and cared for – it’s spine tingling and at once wonderful and overwhelming. It is amazing.

(PS, I really hope I at least covered a little bit of that in my tipsy speech).

It is amazing.

And now it’s official.

I’m frigging 30.

And only slightly stressed about what’s to come, and what I HAVEN’T accomplished yet. But that’s ok. As long as I’m surrounded by the quality people I have in my life, it’ll all work out.

Right?

BAH HUMBUG, AGE AIN'T NOTHING BUT A NUMBER.

birthday month update: ladies who lunch

featuredDSC06177

I’m lucky enough to have some of the loveliest friends any girl could ask for – a diverse crew of fine young ladies who continue to inspire me more and more as the years go by. We all came together over the years, and everytime we manage to all catch up, you just know it’s going to be a good time.

girls laughing

the brilliant gemma and I, being, well, brilliant!

For my birthday month, the incredibly clever Gemma came up with the brilliant idea of the whole group getting together and indulging in Number 8′s Sundays with Mumm menu – set lunch with free flowing Mumm champagne. BRILLIANT, I tell you.

So we all got frocked up last Sunday, and excitedly bustled our way to Crown for what was sure to be a delightful afternoon filled with giggles, tipples, stories, gossip, catchups, and just good ol’ girl time. How very Sex and the City of us.

girls

crazy wives.

As anticipated, it was full of hilarious moments that only got better as the champagne kept being poured. We sat there from midday to late afternoon, and Number 8 did NOT disappoint in showing us a good time. The set menu’s food was rather incredible, for starters:

Pork Belly Salad at Number 8, Crown Casino

Hello, Pork Belly Salad starter. (Salad?? Really??)

steak at Number 8 restaurant, crown casino

Gemma gazes lovingly at her steak main.

Duck breast main at Number 8 restaurant, Crown Casino

my Duck breast main was heavenly.

sticky date pudding at number 8 restaurant, crown casino

someone's scrumptious sticky date pudding dessert.

We enjoyed it very very very much, along with our Brasilian accented waiter who served and pampered us rather wonderfully. Yup. *nods enthusiastically* Enjoyed it VERY VERY MUCH, especially the rather winning way in which he kept topping our champagne glasses up every time they’d subsided even a few millimetres! WINNING.

girls at lunch

aww that's nice!

So how does it feel to have all your girlfriends sit and enjoy a lazy afternoon with you to support you through the crisis of turning dirty thirty? JUST SWELL. As we are growing up, we’re all just geting busier, and actually having an entire afternoon with all of them is rare and pure bliss. Bliss, and being surrounded by friends? Total win for me. All the ladies distracting me from GETTING OLD FEELINGS? Well, I didn’t even cry. This time.

sharon pakir

so relaxed! so happy! so NOT stressed about GETTING OLD!

(Yes, I’m usually notoriously bad with birthdays and feeling inadequate and like time is running out. NOW YOU ALL KNOW MY DIRTY LITTLE SECRET).

So anyway.

As we finished our meal, I heard the clink clink clink of a knife being tapped on a glass, and before I knew it, I was being showered with affection and chatter. GIFT! SOMEONE SAID SOMETHING ABOUT A GIFT.

And then, there was a gorgeous wooden box laid in front of me.

present giving

PRESSIES! *SQUEAL*

And let me just tell you, I AM ONE SPOILT LADY, whose girlfriends bought me a simply lovely Samantha Wills cuff – in Anita’s words “the one Rihanna has”. FREAKING AWESOME. I recently had a few jewellery items err, lost due to err, travel, and this cuff made my day, because now I have one more sentimental piece to add to my collection. THANK YOU GIRLS, I LOVE YOU LONG TIME!

With that, I see the girls sitting across the table from me clap their hands in glee, eyes widening, and what I think is mere excitement at my happiness from gift receiving, turns into SPARKLER CLAD CREME BRULEE CARRIED OUT BY NICE ACCENTED WAITER.

happy birthday!

Yayyyyy! Squealing and happiness ensue!

HOORAY!

There was some singing (and some staring from the other patrons) and some dawning realisation that egads, 30 was most DEFINITELY HERE. I STILL managed to hold it together and not weep, though I did get a tad emotional.

stupid birthday

screw you, getting old!

Yes, I am a true LADY.

ANYWAY.

I had a glorious time. We spent a lovely few hours together, and all tottered home much happier for it, that I am incredibly sure of. And you can’t buy that kind of time or experience – you can only enjoy it immensely, and hope for its return as soon as possible.

Thank you ladies. I appreciated it SO. I’m truly SO lucky to have all of you in my life, and am constantly reflecting upon the fact that it is you all that make Melbourne my home, and a place I WANT to stay.
