diy dinosaur bookends

wielding a saw!

Last week, Anita and I decided to take a little day off to do some crafty fun. She’d seen this nifty little tutorial online on how to make bookends out of some dollar store plastic animals and plastic photoframes, and once she showed it to me, I got a wee bit excited as well.

Surprisingly, it was pretty hard to find plastic animals that were suitable – we hit up the Reject Shop, as well as several asian variety stores, and settled on some dinosaur toys from Kmart. Instead of photoframes, we got point of sale signage plastic holders, so that there was no slant in them.

We tried several methods of cutting them up in half. They didn’t cut well at all with sharp scissors, so we went for the next option in our arsenal:

wielding a saw!

nyahahahahahaa!

A little bit of overkill? Perhaps. But it was fun.

In hindsight, doing that with shorts and no protective shoes on was probably not a good idea.

Moving on!

We soon realised that a sharp box cutter worked MUCH better to slice through the animals cleanly.

that's MUCH easier!

see? much easier.

You will have to ignore the “bloodstain” on my hand. It was actually some 24 hr lipstick I’d tried on 2 days before. Yes, I bought it because its staying power is evidently impressive! (You can buy it too!)

Whilst I worked hard on the slicing and dicing, Anita busied herself with completely useful exercises, such as making a mutant managerie.

very very helpful.

After cutting them all up, we stuck them onto their plastic frames. It was hard to get them to stick, even superglue was pretty useless. The hot glue gun didn’t work at ALL, though we did have a fun time playing with it. In the end though, Gorilla glue did the trick.

Anita magically becoming helpful when it's not manual labour.

drying in the sun!

To be fair, Anita’s skillset is the fiddly stuff (like gluing these animals on delicately). I have no such claims to such skills. Once they’d dried, we took them to the very official spray-painting station in my backyard to get made over.

official. spraypainting. station.

Anita went for silver, and I went for (surprise surprise!) GOLD.

And yes, S did come home and ask why the garden rocks were metallic. He wasn’t impressed.

We used plastic spray paint primer, let it dry for 40 minutes, and then 2 light and thin coats of our colour of choice.

in use...

And yes. I am aware that my bookend bodies don’t match. And that has everything to do with the fact that I LIKE mutant animals and NOTHING to do with the fact that we may have botched a few of the first specimens, OKAY?

Good.

Now that’s sorted, one last gorgeous photo of our wonderfully productive day!

A very good friend of mine has signed up for not one, but THREE October challenges, all in the name of charity. Because the causes she’s supporting are so awesome PLUS I’ll be giggling through the process of watching her be such a very GOOD girl this month (worth oodles in personal entertainment), I thought I’d try and get some of you on the bandwagon to support her, perhaps make a small donation and even perhaps be inspired to do something like this yourself!

this Ocsober stuff is going to be no small feat!

So here goes it, a message from the very lovely Dr Anita Goh:

For the month of October, I’ve signed up for:

1. Ocsober. I have decided to go without alcohol this October to help the charity Life Education raise money for their vital drug and health education programs for Aussie kids.

2. DropTober. I have pledged to lose 2kgs in October to raise money for Kids for Life, who are devoted to raising awareness of sick and under privileged children

3. World Veg week challenge for International Vegetarian Week. This means no meat for a week to celebrate a compassionate choice for a kinder world (this is a bit of a cheat as I’ve gone without meat for decades now, but still raises awareness!).

Basically, I am making the conscious commitment to drink less (none!), get moving, and eat fresh, healthy, nutritious foods that are kind to the earth and to my body. I urge all of you to also think about committing to positive lifestyle changes, to nourish your body, heart, and soul.

It’s also a wonderful opportunity for me to do what I can to raise awareness and funds for much-needed monetary contributions to great organisations that educate our children about the dangers of drugs and the importance of staying healthy, and to support them when sick or underprivileged. Worthy causes indeed!

Why all these pledges?

Personally, I want to be the best Anita I can be. It’s not about the numbers on the scale changing, and I’m not expecting a massive change in body type. For me, it’s about making conscious lifestyle changes in order to get fit and healthy in October and beyond, in order to set me up for life.

I want to be in good shape as I age, with good bone density, strength, flexibility, and stamina, so I can live out dreams such as: having the energy to raise children whilst fulfilling work and relationship goals, fulfilling retirement dreams like climbing up to Machu Picchu with Oren whilst in our twilight years, and being able to chase and whirl my grandchildren around.

October 2011– on my way to a new, happier, healthier lifestyle – doing it for the kids, the animals, to improve health, and oh, you know, save the planet!

days of wine & roses

Mirth is the sweet wine of human life.

It should be offered sparkling with zestful life unto God.

Today, on a whim, a few of us headed out to one of my favourite wineries – Domaine Chandon in the Yarra Valley. We forget how lucky we are here in Melbourne, with so many incredibly good wineries within an hour’s drive of us, and just don’t visit them enough.

We started with an antipasto and a cheese platter, and chattered about the latest (it being a whole 2 DAYS since we saw each other, yet there always seems to be so much to chat about).

Chandon’s range tasting didn’t disappoint, it’s my favourite and I order it every time I go there – a selection of 4 of their awesome sparkling wines. Generous half-glasses, with information card and lots of happy sipping.

It was a glorious day – Melbourne sure does know how to put a good day on. For all that I complain about its moodiness in weather, when it’s good, it’s perfection.
