meme – get yo’ freak on!

So I saw this meme over at the lovely Little Project blog, and thought I’d just do it. Given that today is an office day for me, and I’m just sitting at the computer typing away furiously anyway – what’s another thing to type out?

Especially if it’s fun and allows for a bit of distraction!

one – what’s a nickname only your family calls you?

My family and close friends call me Shan, short for Shannie, which was my childhood nickname. But a nickname only my siblings called me was “Loony”. My Chinese name is pronounced “Shweh Loon”, and they err… took it and ran with it. One of my favourite things is my cousin yelling “LOOONY” in exclamation when I do something ridiculous or silly. If you ask them why they call me Loony, they will claim that it is apt. Don’t listen to them, my family is usually very intelligent but in this case they are wrong.

two – what’s a weird habit of yours?

Just the one?! Are you kidding?!

Okay, here goes.

When I eat, I hate food touching my UPPER lip for some reason. So when I eat things like ice cream, chocolate mousse, or anything mushy on a spoon, I turn the spoon UPSIDE DOWN and then put it in my mouth, so the food doesn’t touch my upper lip. Yes, I’m a total total freak!

three – do you have any weird phobias?

Yes.
I am scared of the sea.
The first time we went to Bali on a team trip, my friend tried taking me for a walk into the waves. We got to standing about knee deep in the pretty lacklustre waves before the SHRIEKING started, and my other friend who was surfing a while away came running because he thought someone was drowning. That friend has never come to the beach with me again.

James did all the paddling, so I had energy and time to do important things like taking photos!

The second time we were on a beach holiday with my team in Langkawi, they tried to break the phobia again. Firstly, we went kayaking. James sat behind me and did ALL the work, then when we got even a little bit far from shore, I demanded that Andrew jump INTO the water to show/prove to me that we weren’t in deep water. No one offered to take me kayaking again. (Andrew DID end up jumping in, just so you know… What can I say, I’m a persuasive girl when hysterical). Then they tried to make me snorkel. In waist deep water. I put the snorkel on, but only tried it on the condition that they all walk in a circle of protection WITH ME. After about 5 minutes, I indignantly put my head up and demanded to know why there were no fishies in the water. At which point my dear friends pointed out that if they were walking next to me, all the fish would know I was coming. No more snorkelling for me.
So now you know. I’m scared of the sea.
Oddly enough, I’m not scared of boats, ships, or anything else. Just being IN the sea.

four – what’s a song you secretly LOVE to blast & belt out when you’re alone?

I don’t really sing! At all! Not even karaoke! Not even in the shower!

five – what’s one of your biggest pet peeves?

I really really hate it when people try to take advantage of others. Even in tiny ways. It’s not the way I operate, so I really detest it when people do it. It makes me question humanity and also my relationships with people when they try to do it to me in even the tiniest of ways.

six – what’s one of your nervous habits?

Hmm. Either I don’t have any, or I haven’t been self aware enough to notice them!

seven – what side of the bed do you sleep on?

ALWAYS the side away from the door, and if there’s a wall, ALWAYS the wall side. It makes me feel safer, even though I realistically know that if there was an axe murderer in my house, a mere 3 feet isn’t going to stop them! In our household though, it’s the right side (if IN bed).

eight – what was your first stuffed animal & it’s name?

I think my first stuffed animal was a stuffed dog. His name was Samuel, which is what I call my dance partner Sam. Ha! Who also calls himself the pug. It’s like my life has come full circle.
I had Samuel (the dog) until I was about 20 when I realised I actually didn’t like stuffed toys at all.

nine – what’s the drink you ALWAYS order at starbucks?

I never have Starbucks. But on the rare occasions I have, it has always been a mocha frozen something or other.

ten – what’s the beauty rule you preach.. but never ACTUALLY practice?

Hmm. I guess it would be drinking a LOT of water (I really struggle with this) and wearing lip balm.

eleven – which way do you face in the shower?

It depends on what I’m doing!

twelve – do you have any ‘weird’ body ‘skills’?

Err. No. I can’t even wink, which is really odd for an otherwise pretty coordinated dancer.

Maybe NOT being able to wink is my weird body UNSKILL?

thirteen – What’s your favorite ‘comfort food’/food thats ‘bad’ but you love to eat it anyways?

Instant noodles. I eat them all the time. SO BAD!

fourteen – what’s a phrase or exclamation you always say?

At the moment they are, “NOY” (for “no”), “Oh my godness”, and “LA LA LA” (acting innocent when actually being naughty). I always say “OH HAI” when answering friends’ phone calls, and always yell “BYE KIDS” when finishing a dance class/rehearsal at my team (who are all grown adults).

fifteen – time to sleep – what are you ACTUALLY wearing?

My favourite Victoria’s Secrets satin pyjamas. Best investment into your sleep happiness EVER. So warm in winter, so cool in summer, and SO soft on your skin! After wearing these, regular cotton or flannel pyjamas make you feel like you’re wearing sandpaper.

Now that I’ve spilled my guts, what are YOUR quirky/freaky characteristics? I would LOVE to know! :)

    1. Can only walk in the middle or on someone’s left side. If I start in the right I barely get a couple of meter before I have to change.

    2. Must have volume on numbers I like. Is only an issue when trying not to wake housemates as there is nothing between 9 and 15 lol.

    3. If / Should I snore (usually if sick or if sleep deprived and exhausted only) there are ‘quirky’ ways in which you can get me to stop without any disturbance to my sleep pattern. I want remember in the morning. And I virtually stop instantly…. But should I disclose publicly Hmmmm.

  3. Carole says:

    1. My family used to call me “Prinny”, short for “Princess” ha ha. Now I don’t have a family nickname – probably too old!
    2. I don’t think it is weird – but I always twist the stem off the apple and stab the apple before I eat it. I am told this is weird, but I disagree.
    3. Weird phobias? Can’t eat mashed potatoes. Something about the texture makes me cringe.
    4. “Killing Me Softly”. Anyone listening would be killed far less softly from the sound!
    5. I can’t stand being sent from counter to counter in any sort of so called “service” – like banks, post offices, phone companies….
    6. I wring my hands when nervous. Seriously.
    7. Closest to the door ha ha!
    8. Fred, my teddy. He is six months older than me and I still have him
    9. Latte! Also at Costas, Gloria Jeans, Pacific Coffee Company and all the chains.
    10. Sunscreen. Despite my skin reacting to all kinds I have ever tried, now that I live in the desert, I am trying to practice what I preach.
    11. I face the shower head.
    12. I CAN lift one eyebrow, either side :)
    13. Comfort Food…. I have to have yoghurt at least once a day. Always plain, preferably but not exclusively Greek.
    14. Mind you….
    15. Jahmies. Star Wars.
