summer drink

Today was a particularly warm March day and it was utterly glorious. I rather inappropriately wore a comfortable maxi dress to work (suited it up with a blazer) and revelled in walking around the city and my neighbourhood running errands after.

It reminded me of the brilliant drink I learnt of this summer, and made me crave it.

See, over the Christmas break, S and I decided to try out a little wine bar near our house for a relaxed date night.

date night!

And this wine bar, otherwise known as THAT BRILLIANT PLACE, had jugs of nectar on their specials board.

NECTAR OF THE HEAVENS.

moscato with lime on ice - summer drink

BRILLIANT SUMMER DRINK

So simple, so good, and I can’t believe I’d never thought of it:

Moscato laced with limes and their juice, served over ice in large red wine glasses.

Somehow, the combination is just electric – the sweetness of the moscato and its just right amount of bubbles, the tropical lime taste tempering the sweetness, the ice making it gushingly, oh so summer-quenching cold, and all that smoothness washing down from a large bulbous glass down your throat.

Oh.

My.

God.

And far be it for ME to hold back this amazing secret – instead, I SHARE my knowledge with you.

In the vain hope that if you have me over, you’ll have a jug of said goodness ready for me, of course.

birthday boy

correct me if I'm wrong but he looks like he is LOVING IT!

A bit over a month ago (and before we got all engaged), it was S’ birthday.

He wanted to keep it low key, and so we had a small family barbeque for him at home with his folks and girls.

quite nice actually!

The problem though is that S spoils me rotten ALL the time – and here we were making the poor man work like a smoke chef on his own birthday. So I decided to keep it low key, whilst trying to show him just how special he is to all of us.

Firstly, as soon as he got home from work, I made him wear a BIRTHDAY BOY badge. He was sooooo thrilled!

aww! cute!

I also decorated the table we set all the food on.

By the end of the night, after a lot of eating, a bit of champagne and a lot of merriment, I ended up decorating him as well for the clincher.

correct me if I'm wrong but he looks like he is LOVING IT!

All in all I think it made S happy, even if it was nothing like the scale he tends to pamper me with. I don’t think I could possibly match up to his impossibly high standards though, so really, he only has himself to blame. :)

being home

the best punjabi food cooked by my dee dee

In January, I made a slapdash decision to go home for Chinese New Year, for a scant 6 days.

It was, as always, heartwarming to be home, especially at such an important time of year. It’s amazing how much you take for granted the feeling of being surrounded by your clan, partaking in simple rituals and traditions that unfold the same way year after year, and how easy it is to slip back into it even after you’ve been away for so long.

What I love about being home is that in a short period of time, I get a crash course in my zany, multi-cultural, super extended super close family all over again. Fully immersed in Pakir-Singh-Wee-Tan-Sim-Lee culture is just fantastic, a little nutty, and very yummy.

And then there’s the giggles, and cackles, the exuberant sharing of stories, the catchups, the goss, the loud shouts that characterizes my family, and ALL with your mouth full of amazing food. All. The. Time.

happy to have witnessed…

kat and leigh engagement

Last year, a couple of friends of mine Kat and Leigh got engaged, married, then pregnant in DIZZYING succession (but most importantly, in the CORRECT succession, nudge nudge, wink wink) – and bad bad me, I had every intention of blogging it all but YOU KNOW HOW THAT STORY GOES DOWN.

Err. Procrastination won the epic battle?

Anyway.

I was looking through some photos whilst convalescing from crazy awful food poisoning, and found their engagement party shots. What I loved about their engagement party was that it was in their family home, with lots of family surrounding them, and was full of culturally significant traditions that included and celebrated both sides of the family. With 2 cultures coming together, it was a beautiful representation of how you can include everyone in your joy whilst remaining true to your families needs and traditions.

It was such an honour to be part of that night, and I particularly love this shot I got (by crawling in front of everyone to make sure I could be paparazzi effectively, coz I’m classy like that).

kat and leigh engagement

moment, captured

Leigh and Kat were both my dance students who have become very good friends, so I kinda know them VERY well, and let me tell you, this photo is perfectly how they present to the outside world. Both gorgeously attired, Kat telling some kind of story with her ever exuberant and delighted smile, because she knows we’re listening attentively, and Leigh, ever quietly watching her with a twinkle in his eye, thinking, “that’s my girl“. (Sometimes he converts that to, “that’s my girl?!”, and NOT in the good way, but that’s usually when Kat is telling us something QUESTIONABLE!). Uh huh. It’s true.

Anyway. It’s really gorgeous.

And Kat and Leigh are one of those couples that just HAVE THEIR STUFF TOGETHER, and who make each other happy and are so well suited, that you kind of just think of them as happy ever after people. And that’s inspiring. And wonderful. And nice to think about.

happy birthday, baby girl

shan and sham

Well, the little one’s birthday is just an hour away now, and I thought it would be fun to dredge up some old old old (read: BLACKMAIL MATERIAL) type photos to send her. Just so that as she turns a whole year older, the gravity of some of the very questionable activities we used to get up to as slightly tipsy ladies would shame her, and not just that, the knowledge that I STILL HAVE THESE PHOTOS you know, sober up her day a little.

However, I didn’t JUST come across treacherously bad photos of mistimed hilarity – I also came across some rather nice and poignant memories of walking the city’s laneways in winter with her, exploring and just chatting whilst the day passed, (wasn’t university just grand for days like what?!), moments of hilarity reserved only for those who spend enough time with you that EVERYTHING becomes a giggly reference, and also just some nights of debauchery. The photo below is one of the few suitable for the internets, and was before a fun night out.

shan and sham

ahh. so fresh faced, so YOUNG! And shiny tacky satin clothes! YAY!

Look at the both of us, in our early twenties, and ready to conquer the night.

Anways. Happy birthday Baby Girl, and I just wanted to say how FAR you’ve come from satin clothes. I am glad though that you’ve retained that sassy hilarious wit and most importantly, I’m super pleased that all this way forward and all grown up, we’re still here for each other. FIST BUMP.

photoshoot with kelly jordan

sharon pakir

One of the things I got up to a couple of months ago was a photoshoot. I hadn’t done any shoots for ages, and felt like I wanted to capture some of my “I just turned 30″ fabulous-ness. Oh and you know, before I went and aged and stuff.

I was booked in for a shoot with the lovely Kelly of Kelly Jordan Photography. The package was an on-location shoot (city, studio or beach), and had makeup inclusive as well. I chose city (I’m not really a beach girl) and to tell the truth, was slightly apprehensive about the make up application. With my skin tone, it’s easy for make up artists who aren’t used to the depth of my colour to over-do the makeup, OR get the shade of foundation wrong. So. I rocked up, not really knowing what to expect, but feeling much re-assured by Kelly’s friendly demeanour on the phone during our booking.

Kelly was simply delightful, and to my happy happy joy, got my makeup perfect – the foundation shade was great (she mixed it to get the right shade), and the colours she used were super natural and made me look just like a better version of me.

I had brought along a few outfits, and told her what kind of shots I wanted and what I wanted them for, and off we went.

I’ve had the absolute pleasure of working with some wonderful photographers, and here are the traits I loved that Kelly shared with some of the better photographers I’ve worked with:

  • She knew exactly the kind of shot she wanted to get, and didn’t hesitate to direct me to getting angles, looks, and emotions to where they needed to be.
  • She was decisive and worked FAST
  • She took advantage of candid moments to get some shots we wouldn’t have been able to get whilst posed
  • She tries to get the shot right the first time, with minimal post-processing

I know all the above sounds like a no-brainer, but I’ve also worked with photographers who haven’t had these things down pat, and having those qualities makes the work of being the subject MUCH easier, and inspires confidence too!

Here’s some of the results from the shoot:

If you want to book a shoot, I’d highly recommend Kelly. Her no-fuss approach, friendly manner and ability to work quickly are things I would highly recommend. She’s priced competitively, and one of the best things is, she doesn’t do the hard sell, instead allowing you to make the decisions of purchase yourself entirely. Find KELLY JORDAN here.

For me – I got exactly what I wanted out of the shoot. Some shots that captured SOME youth (bahahahaha), but also some real shots that I feel made me look like ME. Hooray for everyone!
