Pakir SINGH Legacy 1-4 - TTG ASIA NEWSPAPER ARTICLE

This article was published recently in the TTG Asia Newspaper ((June 10, 2011) about my father. I’ve always known my parents were formidable human beings of greatness, who have given us an unattainable life to live up to (or even close!) – but it’s also wonderful to read from a third party perspective just how much this inspirational man touched the lives of others in every thing he did professionally.

I think we, like so many children, grow up not seeing their parents as anything but in their role as parents, and as we grow up, we start to see the layers that make up these people who loved us so much, raised us so well that we believed our family unit to be the centre of their universe. Little did we know, that they too were like superheroes, each day shedding their parent suit and pulling on their professional ones, and rather awe-inspiringly, touched everyone in their lives as much as they did ours. You can grow up, as we did, knowing that you had wonderful people as parents, but not realise until adulthood just how wonderful, and how special to everyone else too.

I love you Papa, and am so truly gobsmacked by everything you’ve done in life.

Aside from that being an incredible read, (and once again, can I just say, how the heck are we children supposed to live up to this?! Future parents, please take note – all greatness can come at the price of children who underachieve subsequently just because THEY CAN), – can we please note the article came with this hilarious caricature that not only is cute, but captures his superb 5 o’clock shadow magnificently.

horse love

I’ve written before about how terrified I am of horses, and yet I have now been on horseback, and enjoyed it!

A few months ago I found this horrific excuse of a ceramic animal in a thrift store.

ceramic unicornWHAT IS IT?

It’s a unicorn. With a broken horn (see the forlorn hole in its forehead?). AND you can’t tell in this photo, but it’s not only white, it’s covered in glitter. Subtle glitter. You know, to make it extra classy.

Something about it thrilled me though (maybe its bubblegum pink and sparkly mane and tale?) and I bought it for the whole princely sum of $8.

I took it home, and placed it on a brick in the back garden, for…

Now I KNOW this is the wrong kind of primer, BUT you have to hear me out. The entire THING was covered in a plasticky like substance (I think to make it shimmer a bit more) and I didn’t feel like sanding it down. So, plastic primer it was.

I gave it a nice even coat and let it dry overnight, and voila, the finish became roughed up like it had been sanded. YAY!

Then out came the bling. Why the bling? Well I’ve had a recent obsession with brass/gold things. From jewellery, to belts, to homewares, and even lamps. YES, entire gold lamps. Behold just one of the items of magnificence I made my long suffering man cart home from Egypt.

oh yeah baby!

Umm, yeah. S doesn’t entirely approve of my obsession with gold animals, but I’M ON A ROLL HERE and beware anyone who steps into the path of the ROLL.

ANYWAYS.

To cut a long story short, I spray painted the damn unicorn horse morph GOLD.

And here it is. Ain’t she purdy?

(Excuse the crappy reflection of the light in the glass. I err, didn’t plan on that.)

So, I’m officially addicted to spray painting, and I may or may not have run around the house looking for more things I could spray paint gold (cue diabolical laughter) but yes, how good is that $8 investment in my home decor?!

photoshoot with @bythewei

When I was in Singapore, I was lucky enough to once again take part in a photoshoot with the incredibly talented, super visionary and creative photographer Weili. He’s responsible for the picture on the sidebar of this blog.

What makes Weili super good at what he does is a combination of skills that many photographers do not have.

His attention to getting the perfect shot is second to none – he’ll happily take hundreds of shots until he captures the entire package of mood, lines, lighting and contrast.

He also understands vision, and is very much like a magazine’s art director/creative director in that sense – he understands setting the scene, how to make the lighting work like instant real life photoshop (seriously, he somehow obliterated cellulite at one point!) and how to use any space to lighting advantage. The shot below was taken in a room with a BRIGHT blue wall behind me but you totally can’t tell.

Additionally, Weili has people skills – something so lacking in MANY creatives. I don’t know Weili as well as I’d like to as a friend, and yet he has an ability to draw out your emotion and mood and capture the very essence that is in your persona for the shoot. He talks you through, almost coaching you as he yells out things to jolt you into the moment, shows you the shots you’ve taken and guides you through moves and what he’d like to see. I also really love that he allows your personality to shine through, and tries to capture the weird, the whimsical, the intrinsic characteristics that make a person THEM, and isn’t scared to take unorthodox poses. Like so:

my favourite pic of the whole shoot!

Invariably, with all those skills, coupled with his extensive dedication to the technical aspects of photography, he manages to produce shots that are overwhelmingly authentic, real and almost scarily stark. A great piece of art evokes a feeling in you, and I think Weili has this in him as a creative person.

You can view some of the other dance shots in the series here on his site. If you’re based in Singapore and after a shoot, you should totally contact Weili. He’s fab.

single happy moment

sharon pakir and steve

The night before I left for Singapore, S and a bunch of our friends dined at the inimitable Maze, Melbourne (Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant).

Besides being delighted at partaking in some 5-star dining (good restaurants DO please me so!) – this was even more pleasing because Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen, I am almost ashamed to say, is one of my trashy tv favourites – I adore watching him RUN A TIGHT KITCHEN, and yell at people who are acting like fools in it. I love it. I do.

Then there is the rather wonderful fact that my lovely S, who has zero interest in fine dining or good restaurants, consistently takes me to these places for the simple fact that I love them, and he enjoys (his words!) witnessing me coo AT my food lovingly like a deranged child.

Ah, true love.

I didn’t get any shots of the food or the night, we were too busy imbibing and spending joyous times with friends, but I did get this shot at pre-dinner cocktails – capturing basically a very very happy moment.

happiness!

Him looking incredibly spiffy from weeks of healthy habits, me feeling sassy with fresh haircut and buttery soft leather jacket – we were feeing on top of the world, and it’s nice in these hectic weeks of present to look back on that moment just a fleeting 4 weeks ago, and smile.
